The\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Marine\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Megafauna\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Foundation\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0(MMF)\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0are\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0recognized\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0globally\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0for\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 developing\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0enduring conservation\u00c2\u00a0 solutions from pioneering research on some of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s largest ocean giants, whale sharks \u00c2\u00a0and \u00c2\u00a0manta \u00c2\u00a0rays. \u00c2\u00a0Recently, \u00c2\u00a0two \u00c2\u00a0scientific \u00c2\u00a0publications \u00c2\u00a0they \u00c2\u00a0have \u00c2\u00a0lead-authored\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 and \u00c2\u00a0one collaborative article, were listed in PeerJ\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Top 10 Marine Biology papers since the journals inception.<\/p>\n

PeerJ is an open-access platform for scientists to publish and showcase their work. This collection of\u00c2\u00a010 \u00c2\u00a0articles \u00c2\u00a0represents \u00c2\u00a0some \u00c2\u00a0of\u00c2\u00a0 the \u00c2\u00a0most \u00c2\u00a0noteworthy \u00c2\u00a0marine \u00c2\u00a0biology \u00c2\u00a0research, \u00c2\u00a0which \u00c2\u00a0PeerJ \u00c2\u00a0has published up to September 2015. The list was compiled by examining a range of article level metrics \u00e2\u20ac\u201c many of the publications are already highly cited, have been widely tweeted, and had a high number of page views.<\/p>\n

\"MMFThreefold1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As the most read article in PeerJ history, it seems size does\u00c2\u00a0 matter. \u00c2\u00a0World \u00c2\u00a0scientists \u00c2\u00a0teamed \u00c2\u00a0up to analyze trends and review what is currently known about 25 of the ocean\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00c2\u00a0largest \u00c2\u00a0marine \u00c2\u00a0species, \u00c2\u00a0in \u00c2\u00a0Sizing\u00c2\u00a0 Ocean<\/u> Giants<\/u><\/em>. \u00c2\u00a0Dr\u00c2\u00a0 Andrea \u00c2\u00a0Marshall, \u00c2\u00a0Principal \u00c2\u00a0Scientist \u00c2\u00a0for MMF\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00c2\u00a0Manta \u00c2\u00a0Ray\u00c2\u00a0 program, \u00c2\u00a0contributed \u00c2\u00a0information for the largest batoid, the giant manta ray, drawing on data obtained \u00c2\u00a0from the several \u00c2\u00a0locations \u00c2\u00a0where\u00c2\u00a0 their manta ray projects take place.<\/p>\n

Also from the manta ray team, MMF researchers explored alternative methods to obtain DNA by collecting body surface mucus from wild manta rays, using\u00c2\u00a0 a toothbrush \u00c2\u00a0for \u00c2\u00a0Evaluating \u00c2\u00a0manta \u00c2\u00a0ray mucus<\/u> as an alternative DNA source for population genetics<\/u> study<\/u>. <\/em>This study was the first example involving underwater collection of mucus by SCUBA divers and was shown to be an effective, low-cost option to traditional sampling techniques that could create opportunities to apply this method to other shark and ray species.<\/p>\n

\"MMFThreefold3\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Utilizing other pioneering research techniques, the Marine Megafauna whale shark team \u00c2\u00a0used paired- laser photogrammetry to\u00c2\u00a0improve\u00c2\u00a0size\u00c2\u00a0and<\/u>\u00c2\u00a0demographic\u00c2\u00a0estimates\u00c2\u00a0for\u00c2\u00a0whale\u00c2\u00a0sharks<\/u><\/em>,<\/u>\u00c2\u00a0at two coastal\u00c2\u00a0aggregation\u00c2\u00a0sites\u00c2\u00a0in\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0Western\u00c2\u00a0Indian Ocean; \u00c2\u00a0Tofo Beach\u00c2\u00a0in\u00c2\u00a0southern\u00c2\u00a0Mozambique\u00c2\u00a0and Mafia Island, Tanzania. Results of the population segregation by size and sex observed here and elsewhere, reinforces the need to determine the whereabouts of newborn sharks, immature female sharks,\u00c2\u00a0 and mature\u00c2\u00a0 sharks of both sexes to improve conservation and management for this globally threatened species.<\/p>\n
